Kessinger: Busters soccer deserves more fan support

Every once in a while I'll be somewhere -- a football game, basketball game, out in the middle of nowhere -- and something unbelievably incredible will happen.

Something you'll get to witness maybe once in a great, great while. Maybe ever.

Late Sunday afternoon I was at Memorial Stadium for one of those moments. The problem I had with it was the fact that I was witnessing it with no more than 100 spectators. And with the way it went down it is a shame more fans weren't in the stands.

GCCC scores winning goal with 1.7 seconds left in OT

By MIKE KESSINGER

The ball bounced out into the open field off a free kick by Laramie County (Wyo.) Community College and Whitney Brown and Ulises Caba took off down the Memorial Stadium field with possession of the ball.

As the Garden City forward and midfielder led the charge, the only person in front of them was Laramie goalkeeper Brandon Carrick. Time was running out and the Broncbusters had just one chance to prevent the game from going into a second overtime. As Carrick came out to defend, Caba passed to Browne who was losing control of the ball, but as Carrick dove to stop the possession, Browne booted a hard ground drive into the net. All that was left on the game clock was 1.7 seconds and the No. 4-ranked Busters had won 3-2 in the sudden death overtime.

"I thought we had less time than we had," Browne said describing the final possession. "When we scored I saw we had like 1.7 seconds on the clock. It was crazy, we ran really fast for that one."

Mobbed by his teammates at the middle of the field, Browne was the Busters savior on Sunday. The goal was his second in the game as the Busters had to come from behind, trailing 2-0 at intermission.

On the heels of a fourth-place finish in the 2008 NJCAA National Soccer Championships, the Garden City Community College Broncbusters men's team finds itself in the same spot in the 2009 preseason poll released this week.

"We're excited but we've got to go out and earn it," Steve Gorton, GCCC men's coach, said of the early ranking. "I'm not really surprised we're there with the number of starters we have back and I guess I thought we might be even higher, but I'm not disappointed."
